Super 88, a throbbing young guitar driven band, exploded onto the Ontario music scene at the end of 1995. It all started when the first cassette they ever released was placed on the alternative station CHRW RadioWestern's Top 40 chart only weeks after its release. The catchy "Here Come The Droogs", "Breathe" and "Detroit" became favorites and recieved good airplay. At the end of the year, Super 88's "Breathe" was included in the "Top 94.7 Songs of 1996" countdown. The whirlwind continued while the band spent the rest of 1996 and 1997 writing material, playing live, and recording tracks for their upcoming release.
Super 88 is a non-traditional band whose members do not limit themselves to playing or writing on one instrument. Super 88 is a band with some serious mental and musical disorders, the most crippling of which is an awe-inspiring ability to make muscular, groove-driven, 'techno-rock' out of disjointed, clashing ideas and styles. Locked in despairing, techno grooves and entranced by Chris Ferguson (Vocalist / Guitarist) and his solid, yet unorthodoxly askew lyrics, Super 88 melds rock, techno, industrial, dance, spaghetti westerns, good bad jokes and an unerring sense for the instrumentally surprising. Mike Tibensky (Keyboards / Programming), Glenn Williams (Guitar / Programming), Steve Haycock (Bass) and Satan (Electronic Drums) have been writing and performing around Ontario in various bands since the early-90's. They all met each other from playing together in these other bands and now, after numerous member changes, this is the most lethal Super 88 lineup to date.
Their debut album entitled "high energy low frequency" is produced by Dan Brodbeck (Gandharvas, Morganfields) and electronic guru Anthony H (aka Melting Man). The CD debuted at #1 on the CHRW 94.7 fm charts, and has also charted in Vancouver (CJSF - #2) and Top 30 in Waterloo (CKMS), St. Catherines (CFBU), and Hamilton (CIOI). Super 88 can also be heard on Worldwide Radio, Throttlebox and over at MP3.COM. Super 88 will be hitting the road for select dates in the near future so keep your eyes peeled. high energy low frequency was officially released February 1998 on Toronto's Revok Records. The second single, and first video off it, the pulsating "Odyssey" is currently in the pre-production stage and should be finished in early '99.
